In 2004, we organized the “1st International Arbitration And ADR In Africa” Workshop. This first ever All African Arbitration and ADR In Africa Workshop, which was held in July, 2004, at Hilton Hotel, Abuja – Nigeria, was a huge success with over two hundred participants attending and over sixteen scholarly papers of international standard presented.The workshop papers, I am glad to say, have now been published into a book which I edited.
In June, 2006, we held the 2nd International Arbitration & ADR In Africa Workshop, at Hilton Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg – South Africa, with the United Nations' [ITC] Geneva Switzerland and the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa [AFSA] South Africa, in collaboration with some select International Arbitration & ADR Institutions. As expected, we had an excellent workshop with speakers and participants coming from different parts of the world. The workshop papers which I also edited had since been published into a book.
In June, 2007, we had another exceedingly great [3rd ] Workshop at the Hilton & Panari Hotels, Nairobi-Kenya, with a number of International Arbitration & ADR Institutions and the University of Nigeria. We also found time to enjoy the luxury of Kenyan Safari.
The 4 International Arbitration & ADR In Africa Workshop was held at the Conrad Hilton Hotel Cairo – Egypt in July, 2008, in collaboration with University of London [SOAS], United Kingdom; The Cairo Regional Centre For International Commercial Arbitration; etc. As previous workshops, it was a huge success with 22 International Speakers and over 130 participants. We also found time to go on sight seeing/excursion to the Pharaonic Village, the Ancient Egyptian Great Pyramids and had a wonderful departure dinner cruise on the Great River Nile.
The 5th workshop with the most provocative theme – “Protection of Investments In Emerging Markets Through The Instrumentality of Arbitration & ADR” was held at The Westin Grand [V&A Waterfront] Cape Town – South Africa from the 15th to 17th June, 2009, with some other mega Arbitration & ADR Institutions: University of London [SOAS], United Kingdom; The Dubai International Arbitration Centre – United Arab Emirates; The Emirates International Law Centre Dubai – UAE, International Dispute Resolution Institute, among others. |
